Reproductive Biology of Diplodus vulgaris (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817) (Pisces Sparidae) in the west coast of Algeria
https://doi.org/10.31396/Biodiv.Jour.2018.9.4.369.373ABSTRACT
The study of the reproduction of Diplodus vulgaris (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817) (Pisces Sparidae) of the Algerian West coast - carried out from September 2015 to August 2016 - related to 472 specimens, whose overall length ranged between 14.6 cm and 28.4 cm. The ratio of gonad weight to total weight was assessed monthly, and the evolution of the stages of sexual maturity revealed that, for D. vulgaris, the period of reproduction is between October and February with an oviposition in January. The sex ratio related to the size showed that males are dominant in the classes of small sizes (14–18 cm) and females dominate in the classes of great sizes (19–29 cm). -

Reproduction and growth of Axillary seabream Pagellus acarne (Risso, 1827) (Perciformes Sparidae) from the Western Algerian coasts
https://doi.org/10.31396/Biodiv.Jour.2020.11.2.351.358ABSTRACT
Pagellus acarne (Risso, 1827) (Perciformes Sparidae) represents an important component of Algerian fishery catch. Reproduction and growth parameter of this species are studied during 13 months, from fish catched from western Algerian coasts from December 2015 to December 2016. The sex-ratio (F:M) of the population studied is 1:1.56 and is in favor of male. The reproductive season extends between late spring and autumn. The resting period occurs in winter. Length at first maturity is estimated at 18.63 cm and 16.95 cm for females and males respectively. The length-weight relationship obtained is TW=0.009TL3.086 (R²=0.983). The Von Bertalanffy growth equation parameters are K=0.41, L∞=29.97, t0 =-0.34 and the Φ’=2.57. -

The benthic stands of the soft and rocky substrates of the Paloma Island, Algeria
https://doi.org/10.31396/Biodiv.Jour.2019.10.4.343.352ABSTRACT
The Oran coastal zone (Algeria) is distinguished by a remarkable wealth of habitat and species (Posidonia meadow, coralligenous groupers, and endemic seaweed). This work has allowed us to inventory and identify one hundred (100) macrobenthic species of soft substrates and 65 macrobenthic species of rocky substrates. The contents of the different grain size fractions show a homogeneity between the four stations with a trimodal sand dominated by coarse sand (diameter = 0.08–10 mm). The distribution of these species was mapped using the System of Geographic Information (GIS). Finally, the computation of the Shannon-Wiener (H) and Simpson (Si) indices of the rocky and soft substrates of this study area reveal an average ecological richness with a high biological diversity. It is necessary to undertake annual monitoring of macrobenthos through a wider investigation of several sites and stations in a longitudinal and vertical distribution. The “overall biological quality” index will be calculated and refined in order to rank the different sites by establishing specific in- dices for each site. -

Digenean parasites in two congeneric sparid fish and of commercial importance, Pagellus erythrinus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Pagellus acarne (Risso, 1827), from the western Mediterranean coast of Algeria
https://doi.org/10.31396/Biodiv.Jour.2019.10.2.151.158ABSTRACT
The investigation into the digenean fauna of two congeneric sparid fishes (Perciformes Sparidae), Pagellus erythrinus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Pagellus acarne (Risso, 1827), was carried out in the Algerian coasts (Western Mediterranean). These fishes of commercial importance represent an important biological resource for the human population along the Mediterranean coasts. However, the data on their digenean parasites in Algeria are incomplete and the aim of this study is to provide new data on the diversity and species composition of digeneans from these hosts. A total of 240 fishs (120 of each species) were collected from Oran (North-western Algeria) during 12 months between September 2016 and August 2017. Eleven species of digeneans were found in the two fish hosts: (i) Lepocreadium pegorchis (Lepocreadiidae); Lepocreadium album (Lepocreadiidae); Holorchis pychnoporus (Lepocreadiidae); Holorchis spp (Lepocreadiidae); Hemiurus comminus (Hemiuridae); Hemiurus luehei (Hemiuridae); Lepidauchen stenostoma (Acanthocolpidae) and Pachycreadium carnosum (Opecoelidae); Macvicaria crassigula (Opecoelidae) in Pagellus erythrinus; (ii) Lepocreadium pegorchis (Lepocreadiidae); Macvicaria crassigula (Opecoelidae); Zoogonus spp (Zoogonidae) and Hemiurus communis (Hemiuridae) in Pagellus acarne. In the evaluation of the dynamics of the epidemiological index of the community of digenean parasites, two species of fish show seasonal variations. Furthermore, higher prevalence of infestation were registered during the summer season for the Opecaelidae family in the two hosts.
